Architecture and Urban Design are launching a Competition for the best urban landscape design of the central area of Kyivwithin the framework of preparation for UEFA Football Championship – Euro-2012 and for more distant future.
The Competition is supported by Canactions international youth architectural festival, National Union of Architects of Ukraine, Architectural Club and "Stolichni iniciativy".

the aim of the competition is
to suggest the best urban landscape design of the central part of Kyiv within the framework of preparation for European Football Championship Final 2012and to outline general development principles of this territory for a more distant future.
 
the main objectives of the competition are:
-      to draw the attention of professionals and general public to the poor state of urban landscape in the central part of the city;
-      to suggest effective solutions to this problem, adopting a responsible attitude to nature, city and future generations, with the prospects for European integration;
-      to involve remarkable Ukrainian and foreign specialists in architecture, urban design and landscape design, both as participants and members of the jury;
-      to define on a competitive basis the best urban landscape ideas for the central part of Kyiv;
-      to consolidate the efforts of authorities, professionals and general public and to create a precedent of transparent and effective collaboration when solving problems of the national capital
Anticipated outcomes
 
The International Competition for the Urban Landscape Design of the Central Part of Kyiv within the framework of preparation for Euro-2012 anticipates:

  1. The realization of the most efficient urban landscape projectfor the most significant and valuable central part of Kyiv, within the framework of preparation for Euro-2012, which is expected to improve Kyiv urban landscape to the European standards in the long term. The realization of the winning project is going to solve some of the most crucial problems of the Kyiv city centre, such as:
    • to optimize transport network,
    • to expand and structure the existing public spaces,
    • to provide zoning for the Territory according to its functional use (entertainment, recreation, walking facilities, sport),
    • to establish regulations as to advertising, design objects and small architectural forms,
    • to expand green zones,
    • to improve lighting,
    • to install the necessary quantity of public toilets.

 

  1. The identification of strategic directions of the city centre development for the mid-term and long term prospects.

 

  1. The ability to integrate the ideas of the Competition project as to the prospective development of the Territory into the major legal documents that regulate urban development in this area, in the first place – the Comprehensive plan of Kyiv for 2025, which is now under development.

 
The Competition is going to improve the image of Kyiv as a European capital and show to the international community the result of effective collaboration between the authorities, renowned specialists in architecture and modern urban design, and general public.
